What is Intermodal Truck Insurance
The UIIA Endorsement is an important endorsement for any insurance policy related to the transportation industry. This endorsement provides coverage for cargo, motor carriers, and freight forwarders, and is required by most shippers of intermodal freight. It is also used to provide protection for both the insured and the shipper in the event that an accident or loss occurs during the transportation process. By adding the UIIA Endorsement to your insurance policy, you can ensure that your company is fully covered in the event of a disaster or accident. With the right coverage, you can rest easy knowing that your business is protected against any unexpected losses.
Intermodal freight shipping is when cargo is transported by multiple modes (ship, rail, or truck) without ever leaving its original cargo container. Intermodal trucking involves transporting these containers from shipping ports.
Truckers hauling these containers have special insurance needs and coverage limits that revolve around intermodal transport. Many motor carriers lease their intermodal chassis while owning the tractor; in these instances, the motor carrier is required to purchase a Uniform Intermodal Interchange and Facilities Access Agreement (UIIIA). If a motor carrier tries to enter a rail yard or port without the agreement or endorsement, they are likely to be denied entry.

IS INTERMODEL TRUCK INSURANCE NECESSARY?
Yes. If you haul cargo containers straight from the docks or railyard you are obligated to purchase intermodal Insurance coverages. In addition, as an approved UIIA concessionaire, a UIIA certificate is required to be posted by your insurance agent in order to enter the terminals.
The UIIA (Uniform Intermodal Interchange and Facilities Access Agreement) places extra insurance requirements on intermodal truckers. To haul intermodal freight, a trucker must completely meet the following requirement:

-
$1,000,000 Liability coverage
-
$1,000,000 General liability
-
Cargo Insurance with specified limits depending on the equipment provider
-
Trailer Interchange Insurance to cover non-owned equipment/containers being hauled. It must cover comprehensive and collision as well as fire and theft.
-
Truckers Uniform Intermodal Interchange Endorsement (UIIE-1, CA23-17or TE23-17B)
-
Workers Compensation with statutory limits. In addition, Employer’s Liability coverage (varies - optional)
